Let the Mosquito Fly

By Dr. Ato Kwamena Danso · 1 July 2026 · Politics

I write to you today regarding the sudden outbreak of a rather bizarre affliction in our political discourse: selective amnesia compounded by severe ageism. It appears a few ambitious souls have mistaken the serious business of statecraft for a dancehall clash, picking up the microphone to throw shade and manufacture a "beef" just to trend on the airwaves. The target of their latest lyrical exercise? None other than Mr. Mosquito.

They have crawled out of the woodwork to accuse this political colossus of being "part of Ghana’s problem," using recent floods as a convenient yardstick to throw cheap jabs. It is a spectacular display of political myopia. Frankly, those who are leading this charge don’t seem to know their left from their right.

What makes this comedy truly rich, and exceptionally ironic is the identity of the chief protagonist. To think that the mastermind behind this ageist crusade is a sitting Member of Parliament who is currently spending his life's fortune just to cling to his own seat! The comedy writes itself: pouring an inheritance into political survival on one hand, while using the other to point fingers at a man whose staying power didn't require a bank heist.

If age and long service are now automatic disqualifiers, someone should urgently fly this honorable member to Washington to explain his theory to Bernie Sanders. In the grand theater of global politics, there are very few minds sharper than Sanders, just as there are few tacticians more formidable than our own revered Mosquito. You may not like his bite, and you may not like his style, but you cannot deny his stature.

Yet, look at the sequence of events. First, you mount a platform, unleash foul language, and hurl insults at a man who has survived more political seasons than his critics have seen birthdays. Then, before the ink even dries on the front page headlines, you scramble to a radio station to breathlessly announce your own grand ambitions to run for president. It is the political equivalent of crashing a senior elder’s funeral just to hand out your campaign flyers.

We must remind these microphone-happy aspirants of a fundamental truth: democracy is not an entertainment arena where you trend your way into high office by disrespecting the foundation. In a true democracy, we allow the people to choose. We do not disqualify based on the number of grey hairs or decades served. He did not learn from the Kennected thoeries ?

If the NDC wants to choose their leader, that is their prerogative. And ultimately, the final verdict belongs to Ghanaians. Attempting to clear the field by throwing dirt on a giant doesn't make you look taller; it just leaves your hands dirty and your pockets empty.

I salute General Mosquito,

Ato_KD
