From Grace Restaurant to Dutch Handcuffs

Today I simply want to brief you on the latest happenings in our dear Motherland, where governance continues to moonlight as stand‑up comedy.

To begin, the Greater Accra Minister was heard on television boldly declaring that officers are transferred to the North as punishment. Many are calling for her head, but, painfully there is some truth in her words. We have built a country so hyper‑centralized that every facility required to feel useful in society has been squeezed into Accra. Being sent anywhere else feels like exile. And yet, ironically, it is those “punished” officers outside the capital who are doing the real work for Mother Ghana. Instead of decentralizing, we have placed every slice of breath by the shoreline, forcing citizens to travel the length and breadth of the nation just to find a functioning office stamp.

Then there is the tragic case of Charles Ammissah, whose death is yet another indictment of our collapsing healthcare system. The poor doctor is so overwhelmed treating endless queues of patients that he forgets to care for his own mind and body. The nurse on duty has not been paid in two years, so your breathing is not his primary concern. And the ambulance driver? He requires a “fuel contribution” before he will even consider turning the ignition. In Ghana, the patient’s pulse is secondary to the petrol gauge.

What makes this even more absurd is that just in February 2026, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, publicly called for an urgent Emergency Care Law, lamenting the needless deaths of accident victims at health facilities across the country. The Speaker himself admitted the system is killing people, yet here we are, months later, still debating whether ambulances should move without mobile money.

Next is OK Frimpong, the MP who has been apprehended in Dutchland over allegations of money laundering. This is hardly the first time a sitting lawmaker one of the very people who craft our laws has been arrested on foreign soil. You would think they might pass legislation to scrutinize how one spends a life’s fortune just to earn a parliamentary salary that is peanuts compared to the campaign investment. They must, somehow, recoup these monies. I met OK Frimpong briefly in Chicago after his stepfather, the legendary guitarist Mr. Frimpong, passed. The last I heard, he had collapsed Grace Restaurant and packed his bags for London. Now, here we are.

Lastly, it appears the government is developing an allergy to free speech. Abronye again has returned to police custody for allegedly defaming a judge, and an individual who posted a picture of the President with the caption “Dumsor is back” has reportedly gone missing. We have reached a point where it is perfectly legal for the lights to go out, but increasingly dangerous to mention that you are sitting in the dark.

I shall update you again when the next miracle occurs at the rate we are going, that should be before lunchtime.

So long,

Ato_KD
