High Definition Hypocrisy: Why Ayawaso is Watching its Member of Parliament Sleep

I write to inform you of the grand return of the prodigal son of Akwatia, that silver-tongued orator himself, Baba Jamal. You surely remember him as the man who once possessed such metaphysical prowess as a Propaganda Secretary that he could convince a crowd a bleating goat was, in fact, a lowing cow. Sir Walter Scott must have had Baba in mind when he wrote about the "tangled web" of deception, but it seems Baba didn’t just weave the web,he used it to catch a very specific type of fly. After the heartbreak of losing his seat in 2016, Baba retreated to the law courts to sharpen his wits and wait for the political winds to shift toward the NDC once more. When the Ayawaso seat finally became vacant, he didn’t just run; he pounced with the grace of a leopard and the strategy of a master chef. While the pollsters were busy with their spreadsheets, Baba was busy with the logistics of "persuasion." The strategy was a masterclass in unconventional diplomacy, involving 32-inch TVs and hard boiled eggs. Before his opponents could even say "Jack," Baba had secured the crown and left the aspirants wondering. The aftermath, Osagyefo, was a comedy of errors. His own colleagues, men and women who have undoubtedly greased a palm or two in their time, found a sudden, miraculous sense of moral purity. They penned letters discrediting his victory and citing "vote buying" with the straightest of faces. The President, in a fit of righteous indignation, stripped Baba of his Nigerian Ambassadorship. Baba was hauled before a disciplinary committee. But Baba, being the sharp-eyed lawyer he is, stood his ground with a defense as simple as it was devastating. He essentially challenged anyone who had never shared a bowl of food on election day to throw the first stone. Naturally, the stones remained firmly on the ground. Today, the irony came full circle as Baba was sworn back into the August House. The very people who signed petitions against him were there, eyes averted, welcoming him back into the fold with that practiced amnesia only politicians possess. However, the long journey of telling people goats are cows and fighting off his own party has clearly taken its toll. The "Lion of Akwatia" was spotted during his first session back doing something quite relatable: napping. Perhaps he realized that after weaving such a tangled web, the most honest thing a man can do in Parliament is close his eyes and dream of simpler times. The good people of Ayawaso have now returned to their homes to set up their prizes. They are finally plugging in those famous 32-inch TVs, adjusting the antennas, and gathering around the glow of the screen to see what their investment has yielded. And what is the high-definition vision that greets them? It is none other than their man, the "Lion" himself, captured in glorious 1080p resolution, peacefully taking a nap in his parliamentary chair. It appears the voters got exactly what they were promised, a clear view of a man who, having successfully woven his web and outmaneuvered every critic, finally has nothing left to do but dream.
