Giving back to The School

Has it really been 25 years since we marched out of the gates of the school that forged us? It feels like only yesterday we were young men from all walks of life, converging on that hallowed ground to chase an education, only to be greeted by that looming crucifix, a gentle, concrete reminder that while we were there to learn, the Catholic ethos was always watching. They say location is everything, and OWASS certainly proved the point. Unlike certain "colleges" Opoku Ware School remains nestled in that serene environment perfectly conducive for studies. Whether we were navigating the terrain from Kregato to Novotel, we were living the dream that made us the men we are today. How could we forget the cast of characters? The legendary roll call of Debooso, Capt Bala, Awolome, Zoro, Agodia, Kontihene, Kwaku JJ and ITB. And the masters who kept us in line:, Effective Ahmed, Chaw, Mr. Duodo, FOE,Orlando and the unforgettable Wotowohe. Oh and the non teaching staff Mr Billy , RSM, Dr John !! Speaking of Mr. Billy, the memory of that famous walk from the stadium back to OWASS still rings in my ears. After winning the Super Zonals three times in a row, the air was thick with the chant, "Mr. Billy, the boys are coming, Mr. Billy!" as we reclaimed our territory in triumph, stopping the D hall in style. It didn’t matter where you came from; you were identified by a unique number that told the world exactly which house and year group you belonged to. And despite the strong Catholic roots of the school that bears the name of one of the greatest kings of the Ashanti soil, every faith was allowed its expression. This unity was never more evident than during the famous "Imanus" prayer. Regardless of whether you were Catholic, Protestant, or Muslim, we all stood as one. There is a certain chill , a literal shiver down the spine, that one experiences after that chant. It taught us, more than any textbook could, how to support one another as a single, unbreakable unit. What a joy it was to see the convoy return to the only school in Ghana that matters. We might have arrived years ago as boys clutching trunks and chop boxes, but we returned in grand style, a fleet of luxury cars that had our "fierce rivals" hiding behind their computer screens, unable to even blink at the sight of such "Akatakyie" excellence. But beyond the cars and the fanfare, there is a profound sense of joy and pride in going back to help the school that gave us our start. There is something deeply honorable in the best of us reaching back to help the least of us; it is the ultimate expression of the brotherhood we built. To those brothers and mentors who have transitioned to the department beyond: may you rest in the bosom of Abraham. We pour libation to you and our ancestors, honoring the spirits that continue to guide the halls of Opoku Ware. Your legacy is etched in the stone of our success. So, here is to 25 years of brotherhood, sporting dominance, the enduring spirit of service and a gentle reminder to all , there’s only one unique school in Ghana , Opoku Ware School ! Cheers to 25 years! Ato_KD Az Two One Seven
